Sutherland’s Nicholson leads Australian basketball team at World Championship
Sutherland Basketball Association junior and Basketball NSW state team representative Lauren Nicholson will be co-captain of the Australian Under 17 Women’s team to contest the inaugural FIBA World Under 17 Championships at Toulouse, France in July. The talented young guard joins Bendigo junior Tessa Lavey as a co-captain. A member of both the NSW National Intensive Training Program and the NSWIS basketball program, Nicholson has already tasted leading her country, acting as captain when the Under 17 team qualified for the World Championships against New Zealand last year.
The Australian team will depart for Europe on July 7, where they will contest a four-nation tournament in Spain before travelling to France to compete in the first ever World Championship in this age group.
A four-time NSW state representative and winner of the 2008 Basketball NSW Junior Player of the Year award, Nicholson joins eight athletes from the Australian Institute of Sport program on the team, as well as athletes based in Victoria and South Australia.
Basketball NSW Director of Coaching Peter Lonergan, who coaches the Australian Under 17 Women’s team, said the appointment of Nicholson to a leadership role was reward for hard work and commitment over her junior career.
"Lauren has been a four year NITP athlete, has been a terrific player with Sutherland and has shown a commitment to improving her game and being the best she can be," Lonergan said.
"It’s not every day you get asked to lead your country and it takes a special range of qualities to be given that responsibility and we are confident she has those qualities. We are certainly very proud of her from a Basketball NSW perspective and no doubt the Sutherland Basketball Association will be justifiably proud of having played such a key role in her overall development," he added.
Nicholson will tune up for the World Championships by continuing to be a key player for the Sutherland Under 18 women’s team, as well as being part of the Sutherland Waratah Basketball League women’s outfit.
Sutherland's Hill in Australian team for World Championships
The Australian Under 17 men’s team, containing Philip Chircu (Northern Suburbs Bears, NSW), Daniel Hill (Sutherland Sharks) and Andrija Dumovic (Sydney City) began their FIBA U17 World Championships campaign in Hamburg, Germany on July 2.

Sutherland and Sydney FC’s Unzular reflects on Asian Cup success
It has been a magnificent past year for former Sutherland player Servet Unzular. She was part of the Sydney FC team which won last season’s W-League title and won Sydney’s player of the year award.
To cap it all off she was in Australia’s Matildas team which won the 2010 AFC Women’s Asian Cup in China, defeating Korea DPR 5-4 on penalties.
When interviewed recently, Servet Unzular had these reflections:
1. It would be fair to say you won this tournament on the back of your solid defence, not conceding many goals. What do you put this down to?
Determination.
2. You played a full game in the final in horrid conditions, how do you look back on the match?
It was a very, very difficult match. I mean being up 1-0 then going down and having to play an extra half an hour. But I thought we played really well and again, solid in defence and [we] kept them out.
3. What was running through your mind during the penalty shootout?
We’re going to win this.
4. What does it mean to be able to share this experience with so many of your Sydney FC teammates?
It’s lovely. It’s great to have Sydney girls that I train with and see day-to-day and being able to play with them on the big stage. And win!
5. Now that you’re the Champions of Asia, does that give the girls more confidence heading into the World Cup next year?
Yeah, it gives us a lot of confidence. I mean, coming into the tournament I didn’t think everyone thought that we could actually win this and now that we have I think we’ve got enormous confidence.
6. The team has exceeded expectations at the Asian Cup, has the group now set any goals for the World Cup?
Let’s win it! Let’s win the World Cup!
