Brown scores ton in Sutherland Shire junior cricket

Jamie Brown of Illawong Menai led the way for the batsmen on the first day of a two day round was played last weekend in Sutherland Shire Junior cricket. Jamie Brown scored 100 not out for his Illawong Menai 14A team in its total of 212 against Gymea Bay. Illawong had been in trouble early losing its first 6 wickets cheaply before Brown and the lower order led a fightback. No 11 Hayden McLean’s scored 37 in a substantial partnership and enabled Brown to get to triple figures as well as his team to a respectable 212. Bowlers to do the early damage for Gymea Bay were Jordan Trajcevski with 4/40 off ten overs and Matt Finnegan with 3/29 off 12.

Next best batsman for the day was Jonathon Haslam who top scored with 89 not out in Engadine 14A’s score of 4/223 against St Patricks. Other half centuries came from Dylan Issa of Bosco 12A with 55 against St Patricks and Lachlan Ross of Illawong Menai 14B with 52 against Sylvania 14B.

Of the bowlers, Scott Boyton of Engadine 16C was best on the first day of the round with 6 wickets for 15 runs off 10 overs against Bosco who were all out for 91. Next best was Miranda 14B’s Sean Anderson who took 5 wickets for 6 runs off 7 overs against DLS Seagulls who made 95. The other bowler to take 5 or more wickets was Bosco 14A’s Ben Issa who took 5/17 in Como Jannali’s total of 104.

No NSW team in New NBL as Sutherland Sharks continue in WABL

With the preliminary rounds of the current NBL season now over it now appears there will be no NSW based team in the new National Basketball League (NBL).

The Wollongong Hawks and the Sydney Spirit (formerly West Sydney Razorbacks) appear to have celebrated their last games – see reports of last games for the Hawks at www.hawks.com.au and Spirit at http://sportslive.com.au/index.pl?page=971. The apparent loss of these teams in the NBL follows the well publicised demise of the Sydney Kings and Brisbane Bullets before the 2008-09 season began.

For local basketball fans the Sutherland Sharks are expected to continue in the Waratah Australian Basketball League (WABL), the next tier of competition.

SportsLive wonders how the new NBL is going to get off the ground. The current financial crisis is causing most companies to rein in “discretionary expenditure”. It could be argued that professional sports sponsorship is about marketing, and in the tough economic climate companies should continue to market their products and services to ensure they grab sales even if the overall market is declining. However, there is likely to be an increased focus on marketing dollar impact. We wonder if Australian Basketball needs to follow some of the Football Federation of Australia’s recent developments to raise the sport’s profile and attractiveness to sponsors.

• More free to air coverage though Boomers eg need to qualify through Asia so more meaningful Australian games in Australia  – as per football (soccer)
• More free to air coverage eg at least one game per week and/or significant international and national basketball show like SBS football (soccer) coverage. For example Rugby League has a combination of free to air and pay TV cover.

If sponsors don’t get much exposure their marketing dollars will go elsewhere. Furthermore, the new NBL seems to be raising the financial bar when everyone else is tightening their belts. Does Basketball Australia need to look at a new model to match difficult times?

Sutherland’s Bronze in NSW Swimming Championships

Sutherland Leisure Centre Aquadot (SLCA) club’s swimmers took out a bronze and made the finals in a number of events at last weekend’s NSW Swimming Championships.

SLCA’s young 4 x 200m freestyle Women’s relay team took out bronze in the event won by Victoria’s Nunawading club. The team consisted of Brittany Houghton (18 years old), Tanaz Dandy (13), Micaela Abbott (16) and Jordan White (15). SLCA’s women’s 4 x 100m freestyle team came fifth in the final also won by Nunawading. Sutherland’s team was Liana Rayner, Jordan White, Micaela Abbott and Brittany Houghton.

Nineteen year old Erin Malone came sixth in the 200m breaststroke final won by Victoria’s Sara Katsoulis in a NSW championship record time of 1:07.00. Malone also made the final of the Women’s 50 metre breaststroke finishing 8th in the ten woman field behind the winner Tarnee White.  She was one of the youngest in the field. A profile and photo of Erin Malone outlining her swimming aspirations in late 2007 was written by Sportslive Sutherland Shire correspondent Reece Carter. For the story go to http://theshire.sportslive.com.au/index.pl?page=2436.

18 year old Rhett Chapman made the final of the 200m backstroke won by Olympian Ashley Delaney with fellow Olympian Hayden Stoeckel in second place. Chapman finished in ninth spot in the ten man final.

17 year old Matthew Condos came 9th in the ten man final of the 200m breaststroke won by Olympian Brenton Rickard. 22 year old Sherrie Eadie came 4th in women’s 100m freestyle multi-disability event.

Former SLCA swimmer 20 year old Stephen Parkes, now with St Peters club in Queensland, came second in the 200m Individual Medley won by Sam Ashby from Victoria. Parkes also picked up silver in the 400m Individual Medley won by Hunter’s Fraser Holmes.
The NSW Championships are the last major hit out before the Australian Championships in March and therefore attracted a strong field of interstate swimmers and some internationals training in Australia. The Australian Championships also double as the selection trial for the World Swimming Championships in Rome later this year.
