Sutherland wins three in a row in WABL

After defeating Bankstown Bruins by 100 - 90 in semi-final last Saturday night at Gosford, the Sutherland Sharks Waratah Australian Basketball League (WABL) lined up against the Newcastle Hunters in the grand final on the Sunday afternoon. In this most anticipated game of the weekend, both teams got off to nervous starts,  with points at a premium.

BJ Carter carried on his good form from the semis with some long bombs, but it was the Hunters who were in front leading into the first break, up 4. The Sharks turned up the defensive pressure in the second, restricting the Hunters to just 8 second quarter points, while scoring 25 themselves. Carter led all scorers at the main interval with 12 with Steven Hall from Newcastle leading his team with 10. At halftime it was the Sharks in command by 40 – 27.

The Sharks started the second half just where they left off, opening the quarter with a 7-0 run to create a 20 point lead. But just as the game looked becoming a blowout, the Hunters produced a 11-2 run of their own. At the last break of the decider, it was the Sharks by 18.

The Sharks continued to be hot from outside, with Carter hitting several more threes. The Hunters backcourt of Mathew McGovern and Joshua Morgan were their team’s best, but theSharks would not be denied. Sutherland would clinch their third straight Waratah title with a 13 point win. Sutherland’s Blake Henricks was named defensive player of the game, while BJ Carter was named MVP for his 37 point haul.
