Sharks Seniors and Juniors Progress to Basketball Finals

The Sutherland Sharks Waratah Basketball team has completed the preliminary rounds of the competition with a convincing 111- 75 win over the Canberra Nationals. The points were shared around the Sharks with top scorers being Blake Henricks 22, Peter Cvjeticanin 18 , Ben Conquista 13, Thyse Lainela 13 and Dan Morris 12.

Having finished second the Sharks will be playing their first play-off game at Sutherland on Saturday August 2 at 5pm as they strive to win their 3rd successive Championship.   The Sharks play the fifth placed team which will be Central Coast Crusaders.  This is a great opportunity for local basketball fans to show their support.

The finals weekend is being held at Gosford on the following weekend with the semi-finals being held on Saturday and the finals on the Sunday.

The Sutherland Basketball Association 12B1, 14B2, 18B3 and 16G2 teams have fought their way through to the Grand Finals which will be held at Penrith on Sunday 3rd August.  The 16G1 and 16B1 teams this weekend will endeavour to reach the Grand Finals.  With the Australian Championships having been held during the school holidays the 16 & 18 Div 1 teams had to defer their preliminary finals to this weekend.

Bonnie Perris was in the NSW U18 team which won a Silver medal, losing to Victoria Metro. Also Lauren Nicholson, Olivia White and Monica Andrievska won Bronze in the U16 women's, and Daniel Hill and Daniel Behrens also won Bronze in the U16 men's championships.

The State League men head north this weekend to play Ballina in their first playoff game for the State League division two championships.  The team finished 1 point off second spot which then put them into the division 2 championships.  The team is focused on defeating Ballina and, if so, head to Moss Vale the following weekend to play Moss Vale.  The winner of this game will proceed to the ABA finals weekend.

Sutherland’s clean sweep in Premier Youth League

Sutherland Sharks somewhat surprisingly won all five grades against West Sydney Berries in Premier Youth League last weekend. While the ladder leading 13s and 14s were expected to win, the 18s in 12th spot and the 15s in 9th position were expected to struggle against their higher placed opponents. But inspired by the earlier wins of the 13s and 14s, the 15s and 18s  pulled off solid wins as did the 16s.

Full results for last weekend’s games between Sutherland Sharks and West Sydney Berries were:
Under 18: Sharks won 2 -1
Under 16: Sharks won 2 -1
Under 15: Sharks won 4 nil
Under 14: Sharks won 2 - 1
Under 13: Sharks won 1 nil

Sutherland to Surf Fun Run and Walk Results

There were those who just went into last Sunday’s Sutherland to Surf run or walk just for fun. There were others who were there to test themselves as well as compete for the prizes.

In both the men’s and women’s 11 km runs, the top three place getters came from outside of the Shire. In the men’s the winner was Gemchu Woyecha of Belconnen followed by Courtney Atkinson of Mermaid Waters and Philo Saunders of Higgins. The women’s run was won by Eliza Stewart of Marsfield followed by Tara Prowse of Willoughby and Anita Keem of Wollongong.

In the 11km walk the locals did somewhat better with the winner being Samantha Pitt of Erina followed by Mark Wallace of Caringbah and Christopher Moir of Gymea Bay.

Active After School Communities (AASC) Program makes its mark

Cheryl Battaerd of the Australian Sports Commission provides a snapshot of just a few of the active after school activities and partnerships happening in NSW:

In Term 3 2008

• The Australian After Schools Activities AASC is operating in 1000 schools and out of school hours services (OOSHs) in NSW – 3,250 nationally
• Over fifty percent of the schools and OOSHs operating the AASC program are in rural, regional or remote locations
• Approximately 50,000 primary school children in NSW every week are participating in over 60 different types of sports and physical activities - 150,000 children participate nationally and
• 2,500 AASC activity sessions are being run each week in NSW

As an Australian Government initiative, the AASC program is investing $8 million this year into NSW schools, sporting and community clubs to provide physical activity and sport programs in the after school hours time as well as healthy afternoon teas for the children at the schools involved. The training, funding and resources provided are also supporting the provision of fun, safe inclusive sporting and structured physical activity opportunities within school curriculum time, in the evenings and on weekends.

Underpinning the AASC program is a comprehensive training course for teachers, OOSH staff, coaches and community members. The free course provides participants with the skills and confidence to plan, prepare and deliver fun, safe and inclusive games and activities for children.

The Community Coach Training program has 5 modules:

1.   Role of the Coach and encouraging playing for Life
2.   Communication & Behaviour management
3.   Safe environments
4.   Nutrition, wellbeing  & cultural considerations
5.   Playing for Life  (4-5 hour practical session)

The Australian Sports Commission is also providing a free Online General Principles of Coaching course: https://learning.ausport.gov.au. Since the start of the AASC program in Term 2 2005, 7000 community coaches have been trained in NSW. Of these:

• 37% are teachers and OOSH staff
•  28% Organisation representatives: clubs, NFP organisations and industry employees
•  35% Sole providers; coaches, relative of  children, tertiary and secondary students as well as community members

There are many great community initiatives, partnerships with state and local government and non government agencies as well as pathways created to community sport through the AASC program. Such partnerships have enhanced outcomes for all involved and ensured that more children and communities have access to the health and social benefits provided by regular participation in sport and structured physical activity.
