Sutherland hosts NSW State League Basketball games next weekend

Sutherland provides the "Central Venue" round for some of the final games in the preliminary rounds of the 2008 NSW State League Basketball competition.

The third-placed Springwood Scorchers in Pool D appear to have lost their chance of reaching the division one playoffs (only two teams from each pool go through) but will be hoping the teams from Pool B (their opponents this weekend) provide their three Sydney-based opponents with a real challenge.

The Scorchers will be joined in Sutherland by the Central Coast Crusaders and Macarthur Heat and each of the Sydney-based teams will play the Wagga Wagga Heat, Bathurst Goldminers and Shoalhaven over the two days of July 5-6.

Should the finishing positions after the weekend's round of games remain as they are in Pool D, the Scorchers will be relegated to the second division playoffs.

Scorchers head coach Vince Browning was full of praise for his team, after last week's disappointing loss to the Central Coast Crusaders and will be keen for his senior group of Nick Ferrari, Keith Browning, Rimond Abboud and Adrian Qumivutia to again step up and show their class this weekend.

Cricket Australia Level 1 Coaching Courses

As discussed in last week’s column, Cricket Australia is providing Level 1 coaching courses. The level 1 Coaching Course is a comprehensive program that is directed towards coaches at under-age and community cricket level. By completing this course you will broaden the knowledge you have of the technical skills of the game, understand appropriate and effective ways to conduct sessions and improve your skills as a coach.

The course has no pre-requisites and involves an online component as well as an 8 hour practical day. The online component you will undertake is the Australian Sports Commission Beginning General Coaching Principles course. The practical component will be conducted over one day (8 hours) and each person completes a practical assessment at the end of the session.

For more details contact Donna Little, coach education coordinator, (Ph: 0414 708 591) or keep an eye on the link below for a list of courses coming soon. The booking process is completed online and a form can be downloaded from this link as well.

Volunteers in sport

There’s no doubt that volunteers are vital to the successful running of a sports club. NSW Sport and Recreation recently commissioned Griffith University to complete a study of innovative volunteer club practices and the issues facing volunteers throughout New South Wales.
