Stevens takes silver behind Hackett in great time

Sutherland’s Craig Stevens has taken the silver behind Grant Hackett in the 400 metre freestyle event at the Australian swimming championships. In a very fast event Hackett won in a time of 3.43.15 just short of his personal best (PB) time set in 2001. Stevens also did a PB of 3.46.64 and to qualify for the Olympics.

As there were no semi-finals in the 400m freestyle event there was a B-Final of the fastest 9 to16 qualifiers. This was won by Sutherland’s Ky Hurst.

In a promising performance nineteen year old Stephen Parkes came fourth in the final of the 400m individual medley in 4.23.71 which was almost 3 secs better than his seed time to qualify for the event.
Sutherland’s eighteen year old Erin Malone just missed out on a place in the 100m breaststroke final. She was ultimately ranked 12th after both semi finals. In the 200m breaststroke she was ranked 13th after the semi-finals.

Six Sydney based players in 2008 Boomers Squad

Basketball Australia has announced the athletes selected to represent the Australia Post Boomers in the lead up to Beijing. The 33 man squad was announced recently at Rosehill Public School in Sydney’s west, where classes are named after Olympic teams and the first grade class is called ‘The Boomers’.
The squad includes West Sydney Razorbacks Matthew Knight and five Sydney Kings players.

The athletes will be put through a rigorous schedule of training camps and international practice games before the names of the final 12 players are a provided to the AOC in early July.

“The first step was to get everybody to put their hand up for selection and we got everyone we wanted with the exception of Stephen Black, who made himself unavailable due to injury” Goorjian said.

“We’ve got a strong squad and some very good players will miss the cut.”
