Island Halt – Cronulla’s Body Boarding Challenge Update

DUE to low tides and swells being either too big or from the wrong direction over the past week, the Human Cronulla Shark Island Challenge Quarter finals have been placed on standby.

Although the East Coast has been blitzed by decent swells over the past few weeks, the event has been postponed until appropriate and ‘contestable conditions’ arise.

Unfavourable tide periods have been the main reason for the events suspension, and organisers are hopefully looking at staging the Quarter finals in the last tidal window of the large 30 day waiting period.

The event needs only two hours before the high tide and two hours after for the final day to be completed - a total of just four hours.

“We’ve had a couple of close days when we could have held the next round but the conditions in one way or another have seemed to somehow work against us,” event organiser Mark Fordham said.

“We will be hoping that the latest swell predicted for this coming weekend will produce some waves in the 4-5ft range. If by any chance we are unable to hold the event out at Shark Island due to unfavourable conditions we will trip over into the 10 day extension which starts on the 15th of July and a suitable location will be sourced to finish the event.”

With the elimination format being introduced a few years ago, the first round saw a few shock exits. Local Shire rider Andrew Lester, regarded as one of the most relentless riders on the IBA Men’s World Tour, bowed out of the event as the 4-5ft reef break produced frustratingly limited waves throughout his heat.

“Yeah, the waves were pretty average for my heat. I just couldn’t get the ones to get me through,” Lester said.

Other first round casualties included Australian heavyweight Mitch Rawlins as well as young guns Adam Luehman and Glen Thurston, Reunion Islands Amaury Laverhne and Laury Grenier, and Portugals Gustao Entrudo.

Locals Dave Ballard and John Showell displayed their potential, producing some clean and dynamic manoeuvres to both convincingly win their respective heats.

With the recent high tides in effect, a low pressure system is expected to push some S/SE ground swell up the coast of NSW later this week. Fordham and other organisers are set to make a definite call during the week when a more accurate forecast is available.

“It’s in the hands of Mother Nature - hopefully we will be blessed with some contestable conditions.”

Sharks split Round against Wanderers

The Sharks had mixed success against the Sydney Wanderers in Round 20 of the Premier Youth League soccer. As would be expected the table topping under 13s and under 16s both had wins. However, the 13s had to fight hard to ensure a one nil win against their 12th placed opponents.

Unfortunately a loss by the 18s to the lower placed Wanderers saw the Sharks drop out of the top five.

Full results for Round 20 against Sydney Wanderers at Seymour Shaw Field were:

Sharks U13 won 1 nil
Sharks U14 drew 1 all
Sharks U15 lost 2 nil
Sharks U16 won 3 nil
Sharks U18 lost 2 nil

Sharks Teams unexpected results in WABL

The Sharks Waratah Australian Basketball League teams split their round against Hills Hornets. However, the results were quite unexpected.

The ladder leading men’s team lost to the fifth placed Hornets, but the Sharks women’s team in 11th spot had a comprehensive win over their opponents. This caused the Hornets women to drop out of the top 6.

Hills Hornets 102 (Ben Arkell 27, Jason Strong 16, Phil Collins 14) def Sutherland Sharks 87 (John Sheehy 17, Ben Conguista 16, Brendan Gleeson 15)

Sutherland Sharks 57 (Kylie Gallaway 17, Kelly Richards 15, Amy Kubbinga 6) def Hills Hornets 32 (Innes Roose 7, Michelle Parker 5, Selena Wawrzyniak 6)
