The Astrological Saturn

Saturn takes approximately 29 years to complete one cycle of the zodiac, spending around two years in each sign. Up until the discovery of Uranus in 1781 Saturn was the furthermost known planet, hence the reputation for boundaries and limitations.

In Greek mythology Saturn was known as Kronos and traditional astrology had him known as the malefic planet associated with agriculture, animal husbandry, farm laborers and basically hard work. Today the frustrating experiences of Saturn whether we use psychological or esoteric terminology, the basic fact remains the same: human beings do not earn free will except through self discovery, and we do not attempt self discovery until things become so painful that we have no other choice.

Saturn is connected to the educational value of pain and with the difference between external values – those which we acquire from others – and internal values-those which we have worked to discover within ourselves.

The personal planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars) and the Luminaries (Sun, Moon) have been dealt with and make up the personality and character of an individual. What we see here with the Transitional Planets (Jupiter, Saturn) is how the personality will broaden and learn wisdom (Jupiter); and where we will face lessons of responsibility and growth of maturity (Saturn). These two planets work together and are the first steps in playing our role in society, in discovering a sense of belonging and ability to contribute to law and order in all facets of human behaviour and happenings.

Saturn’s position in the horoscope indicates the kind of responsibility we are obliged to face and the type of lessons we must learn. By dint of hard work and discipline, we learn to cope with many difficulties and in this way find order and security.
