Bodyboarding: Cronulla’s Shark Island Challenge first round results
Huge swell challenges riders:
After an agonising wait the first Round of ‘The 2009 Nomad Shark Island Challenge’ finally got underway in what some are claiming to be suicidal conditions. The anticipated Easterly swell delivered waves in the 2m range with its direction causing some major headaches for some of the riders.
The first two heats saw some incredible action and commitment with competitors copping the full fury of an angry Shark Island. With the swell hitting the reef straight on wave knowledge was the leading edge to success.
To open up proceedings Heat 1 saw a massive wipe out from Glen Thurston. Arguably un-makeable, Thurston lined himself up for a date with the reef which resulted in two severely lacerated ankles and minor bruising to the side of his back.
Tamarama's Jose Marquina managed to find a few clean ones as did South Coast charger Jason Finlay who used all of his reef knowledge to acquire some solid tube time.
As the heat progressed the crowd went wild for 1999 SIC Champion Christian "Rissole" Riguccini. Rissole surfed his heat well finding the tube on most of his waves and coming close to scoring the tube of the day only being denied on a pinching ‘Surge” section.

Sutherland’s Gan talks about his Sydney FC experience so far
One of Sydney FC’s youngest players, Brendan Gan played for the Sutherland Sharks in NSW Premier League before joining Sydney FC last season, initially in Youth Grade. During the second half of last season he was promoted to Sydney’s A-League side. He talks about what it has been like adapting to a new League and how he feels about the pre-season so far.
Q. You made the transition from Youth League to full-time A-League this year. What are the biggest adjustments you’ve had to make?
I’ve found the speed of the game to be a lot quicker and the quality is of a great standard. Transitioning into the Sydney FC squad has been made a lot easier by the attitude of all the current players. They are very welcoming and always keen to give a helping hand with problems, on and off the pitch. Adjusting to the game has been a good experience and I continue to learn day by day.
Q. How have you found the pre-season matches?
Pre-season has been a great experience. The adjustment to a European type tactical game has advanced my knowledge and helped me understand the game a lot better. I have scored 4 goals in 9 games and hope to score a few more in the next couple of trials. Pre-season could hardly be better as we have not yet lost a game and conceded only 1 goal. The boys have been in top form and hopefully we’ll take it into the season.

Sharks women basketballers almost maul Bears
In last weekend’s Waratah Basketball League match at Sutherland Basketball Stadium the Sutherland Sharks women’s team in 9th place were not expected to trouble the play-off bound Norths Bears (4th place). However, the Sharks surprised the local fans by leading 36 – 32 at half time and moving further ahead in the third quarter to lead by 59 – 52 going into the final term. Unfortunately for the Sharks, the Bears finished very strongly in the fourth quarter to take the match by 75 – 73. Top scorers for the Sharks were Peta Kneen (26), Melinda Bartlett (13) and Lauren Nicholson (12) while Petra Kroika (20) and Tanya Smith (16) were best for the Bears.
In the men’s match the 4th placed Bears were far too strong for the 8th placed Sharks. The Bears led at the main break by 44 – 36 and then finished strongly in the second half to take the match by 91 – 69. Best scorers for the Sharks were Blake Henricks (23), Rod Proctor (12) and Peter Cvjeticanin (10).
