Have you ever felt like life, work and business is just “more of the same” dull, routine and lacking in the challenge, excitement, mental stimulation and purpose that you know deep down inside it should have?
Or perhaps you feel like there must be more … and you think to yourself:
Yes, my business is providing great products and/or services to my customers,
Yes, my employees enjoy being part of my team and we have fun together,
Yes, I am making a good living from what I do,
Yes, I have the respect of my peers and the community in which I work and live,
Yes….(you insert what applies to you and how you feel deep within)
BUT there still must be more!
Well the good news is there is more
It is true that as a business person you have the awesome privilege and responsibility of serving your fellow citizens and in exchange for that you receive money or some other form of compensation.
As a result of the commercial success that you achieve you have the opportunity to choose how you will act, live and contribute to the benefit of society overall.
CHOICES
You can be like a reservoir that has been permanently plugged so that the water is stagnant and cannot flow to surrounding areas
OR
You can be like a mighty river flowing rapidly and irrigating the low lying lands along its path bringing essential nutrients and clean fresh, life giving water in which the fish and wildlife flourish.
In other words, the blessings and commercial success that you enjoy and the consequent positive impact on others can be inadvertently stopped much like the reservoir – where the water stopped flowing and became stagnant or you can purposefully choose to impact the lives of others.
I trust that you will choose to purposefully impact others with whatever it is that you do.
In recent times I have found myself challenged greatly in this area and want to encourage you, my fellow business person or employee to be grateful for the many blessings that you enjoy each day (for example, Hey you’re alive and above ground…..it’s gotta be a good day hasn’t it?).
I find it refreshing to think about what opportunities might come my way today to brighten the life of someone I may meet even if fleetingly and to do it without any expectation of a return.
I can guarantee that if you will take your focus off yourself and your own problems (yes it’s true we all have them) and look for ways to brighten the day of someone else, then life will take on a new perspective - one of anticipation of the good that’s going to happen to day along with the pure joy of giving or helping cause you can and want to.
I encourage you to try it …You’ll like it, and you’ll find that a sense of life giving purpose will be restored to your soul – which in turn will restore a sense of life and purpose to all you do.
At this point I can hear someone say, “That’s all well and good Paul, but isn’t that insignificant in the scheme of things?”
No my friend, it’s not. Especially to the person that is on the receiving end of what we might call your random act of kindness. For them it will be hugely significant even though they may not tell you so.
Now, for the cynics reading this I want to be very clear.
I am not saying that you cannot live a great life and enjoy the fruits of your labor through great homes, cars, boats, vacations or whatever is your thing.
However I challenge you not to live a purely self-indulgent lifestyle. After all you can’t take it with you. (The Egyptian Pharaohs’’ tried with all their buried treasure only to have it stolen by grave robbers)
You can live well AND be a blessing to others AND increase the family/business fortune so you can continue to give and give and give.
Seems contradictory doesn’t it?
Yet if you think about it we all know this principle from farming.
If you sow tomato seeds you know that you are going to get a crop of tomatoes (not bananas). If you don’t sow, there will be no harvest.
Each seed will reproduce after its own kind.
So … the question is what sort of seeds (financial, relationship etc) are you sowing?
Or perhaps even better
What sort of harvest are you expecting? And is the seed you planted in alignment with the harvest you want?
You cannot expect to sow one type of seed and get another type of harvest.
That would be against the laws of the universe established in the beginning.
And don’t make the mistakes of
1. Only sowing to get a harvest. (It is not unreasonable to expect a harvest but it should not be your only motivation)
2. Expecting the harvest before its time. (Imagine planting tomato seeds today and running out tomorrow expecting your crop. Ridiculous.)
3. Don’t forget to look after the seeds – watering them and keeping way the worms of negativity, doubt and fear.
Hmmm…still not convinced…..
Let me change pace and bring into focus the application for your business.
If you are not getting the harvest of sales and profits that you want from your business then you need to consider the quantity and type of seed you are sowing and where you are sowing them.
For example:
1. Need more customers? What marketing seeds are you sowing?
2. Need better sales conversion rates? What sales training seeds are you sowing?
3. Have staff issues? What sort of seeds are you sowing?
4. Have productivity issues? What seeds of reward for effort are you sowing?
You can apply these principles to all manner of business processes with a view to identifying and addressing the core issues.
Remember to say that you know and yet do not DO, is to really demonstrate that you do not really know.
Are you getting the harvest you want from your life and business?
If not then perhaps it’s time to take a good hard look at the seed you are sowing before it’s too late.

A thief in Paris planned to steal some paintings from the Louvre.
After careful planning, he got past security, stole the paintings, and made it safely to his van. However, he was captured only two blocks away when he ran out of gas.
When asked how he could mastermind such a crime and make such an obvious error, he replied, 'Monsieur, zat is ze reason I stole ze paintings, I 'ad no Monet to buy Degas to make ze Van Gogh'.
.... and you thought I wouldn't have De Gaulle to send this to you! Well, I figure I had nothing Toulouse.
