Browne’s 4 wickets can’t save Sutherland’s Durham Shield side
In round 4 of NSW cricket’s Durham Shield (under 19), Sutherland played neighbours George’s River St George at Cahill Oval on January 13. Sutherland won the toss and batted first but could not get on top of the bowlers to be dismissed for 63 with only two batsmen making double figures. Sutherlands opening bowlers Browne and McKinley did their best to roll the opposition with Browne taking 4/34 and McKinley 1/15 but Sutherland’s meagre total was not enough to defend. George’s River St George ultimately passed Sutherland’s score with 5 wickets in hand.
In round 5 Sutherland took on Fairfield Liverpool at Caringbah on 20th January. Sutherland was sent in and despite opener Jenkins’ 27 and Spring’s 23 the team could only manage to score 108. Fairfield’s openers, Ferguson and Lannuzzelli then had an unbeaten stand of 111 to easily pass the home side’s score.
With these losses, Sutherland’s Durham Shield side missed out on the semi-finals. Sutherland’s surviving Martin Shield team in Division 2 had its quarter final game washed out against Camden.
