Recycle bins for National Park

Expected to recover more than 40 tonnes of recyclable materials annually

Member for Heathcote, Paul McLeay celebrated National Recycling Week with the launch of Royal National Park’s redesigned waste and recycling system. The redesign includes the installation of colourful new recycling bins with clear signage, which will be rolled out throughout the public areas of the park over the next few months.

Over 2.5 million visitors to the Royal National Park will soon be able to recycle their rubbish and do the right thing thanks to a joint initiative between the National Parks and Wildlife Service and the Packaging Stewardship Forum.

“We all know the importance of recycling - not only in reducing the huge amounts of waste going into our tips and landfills, but to ensure we get the most out of all our limited resources, Mr McLeay said.

“The new bins are expected to recover more than 40 tonnes of recyclable materials annually, waste which would have otherwise ended up in landfill or as litter in the park. The provision of these recycling bins will encourage visitors throughout the park to recycle and keep the surroundings litter free so they can enjoy what the Royal National Park has to offer.

“The implementation of the bins is complemented by park staff training in waste auditing, new signage and logos for educating the public on correct binning behaviour and the undertaking of social research on littering in the park which will take place over the next month.

“By introducing more public place recycling systems into major tourism areas we are making it easy for people to recycle when they are away from home,” Mr McLeay said.

New kiosk not far away

The long-awaited decision on the lease for a new 100-seat restaurant on the Cronulla Beach Esplanade has been awarded to the current operators of the Alley Break Café. The new lease follows a decision to terminate the previously awarded contract.

The project to revitalise the old kiosk site has been wrought with frustrations for all concerned, from legal complications to the collapse of a nearby retaining wall.  However, Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club president, Kevin Neilson, is confident that all will be forgotten once both the Sutherland Shire Council and State Government sign off on the lease agreement and work can proceed.

Despite objections from nearby residents, the surf club won council approval for the restaurant to operate from 6am to 10pm, seven days a week.
