Living and working in the Shire gives Dave Reid a unique opportunity to cross paths with many of his customers. “I love coming across a customer who I built a house for years ago and have them come up to me and thank me for the job I did. It really makes it worthwhile,” Dave says.
Apart from satisfied customers, Dave loves watching his projects evolve and describes them as almost growing out of the ground. He loves being able to see progress each week and have the freedom and flexibility to take on different projects – one of the rewards, Dave thinks, of working for yourself.
Dave started out in 1994 doing small renovations and carpentry subcontract work. With Carpentry and Joinery and Building trade licences behind him, Dave slowly grew his business to include small domestic construction.
Nowadays Dave does alterations and additions, new homes and medium density developments, mostly in the domestic market. With a reputation of producing quality work, Dave receives his work through referrals as well as through a select number of architects.
Dave has always tried to maintain a hands-on approach to his business and manages all aspects of the process from quoting and site construction to invoicing and account reconciliation. By keeping his overheads low and with cashflow as a priority Dave has been able to ensure a high level service at an affordable price.
Hallmarks of Dave’s service are staying up to speed with the latest standards and trends; trying to provide the client with whatever they want so long as it is possible; and treating people the way he would like to be treated. Dave credits these qualities with his ongoing success as a builder in a competitive market. To keep up with demand, he believes he may need to run as many projects at once as he possibly can, so long as he doesn’t lose control.
Building his dream home is his next priority, which Dave sees as his way of saying thanks to his loving and supportive wife and family who have been there from the beginning.
With only the occasional day off, much of his home and social activities are scheduled around his children’s sport and recreation. Where possible, Dave and his family like to spend time at the beach, with family and friends, walking the dog or simply relaxing.
An avid sports fan, especially being a Newington Old Boy, Dave plays Oztag. He also enjoys a bit of fishing and surfing and keeps his hands in football by remaining involved with his son’s footy team.
Time is precious for the family man who loves to build homes for other families to enjoy.
