Relay the biggest yet

More than $200,000 raised

Last week we told you about the Sutherland Relay for Life 2007. We’re happy to announce this year’s event was the biggest on record, with more than $200,000 raised - and they’re still counting!

The 24-hour relay event, held at Sylvania athletics track, saw 2,000 people take part. Despite the wet weather people started arriving at 6am and, by the day’s end, thousands of spectators and families had enjoyed the entertainment on offer.

Almost everyone had a story to tell about someone they had lost and the candlelight ceremony of hope was a touching highlight. With the prayer said, thousands of camera flashes went off for more than 10 minutes.

The outpouring of support from the community overwhelmed the organising committee – they want to thank everyone who took part and came along.

See you at Relay for Life 2008.

Upgrading the Engadine Shopping Precinct

An upgrade of the Old Princes Hwy and Engadine shopping precinct is due to begin in early June, immediately after the Engadine Community Fair.

The upgrade will include putting aerial power cables underground, widening footpaths, reducing the height of the kerb, landscaping, cycle racks, installing a playground and sealing the existing car park at the western end of the Old Princes Hwy.

The final design was agreed after feedback from the local community and the Chamber of Commerce. The purpose and the design of the upgrade is to encourage the community to do their shopping locally, as well as attracting visitors.

Not just for the aesthetic appeal, the upgrade is also about improving safety and visibility for pedestrians and drivers.
